This year, Barcelona's Gran Teatro del Liceu received one of the six prizes at the 2014 European Energy Service Award for reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Specifically, new retrofits to the building's air conditioning system and the incorporation of a new building management system saw a 43.8% reduction in annual electric consumption and a 35.8% decrease in biogas consumption.
The success of large retrofit projects such as this one signals the value of continuing to invest in energy efficiency projects not only in Barcelona but throughout the European Union. Retrofits like the one done for the Gran Teatro del Liceu can act as examples to other cities for how they can increase energy efficiency while reducing carbon emissions output as part of their transition to become post-carbon cities.
